Manual Lymphatic Drainage
Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a gentle, specialized technique designed to support the movement of lymphatic fluid and reduce swelling, congestion, and fluid accumulation. It may be appropriate for individuals with lymphatic or circulatory conditions, as well as those recovering from surgery, injury, or certain medical procedures.
Who May Benefit from MLD?
MLD may be incorporated into care for individuals experiencing:
-
Lymphedema & lymphatic dysfunction
Lipedema
Chronic venous insufficiency
Swelling associated with certain medical conditions or treatments
-
Plastic & cosmetic procedures, including liposuction and body-contouring procedures
Abdominal and gynecological surgery
Orthopedic procedures and injuries
Swelling, bruising, and fluid accumulation following procedures or trauma
-
Post-travel or activity-related swelling
Localized facial or sinus congestion
Other situations where gentle lymphatic support may be appropriate
MLD should be performed with consideration of the individual’s medical history and, when appropriate, in coordination with their healthcare provider.
What makes MLD Different?
MLD is not a traditional deep-tissue massage. The technique uses very light, rhythmic, and precise skin-stretching movements to work with the superficial lymphatic system. Unlike deeper massage techniques that target muscles and connective tissue, MLD is performed without oils or lotions and uses minimal pressure—typically without pain, friction, or redness.
The Vodder Technique
The Vodder technique, developed by Dr. Emil Vodder in the 1930s, uses specific rhythmic movements and gentle skin stretching to support lymphatic flow. Gregg Projansky, LMT, CMLDT, completed specialized Manual Lymphatic Drainage training through Klose Training in the Vodder technique and its clinical application.
When MLD May Not Be Appropriate
MLD is not appropriate for everyone. Treatment may be contraindicated with certain conditions, including:
Active infection or cellulitis
Untreated or suspected deep vein thrombosis (DVT)
Certain forms of congestive heart failure
Certain kidney conditions
A medical evaluation or clearance may be recommended before treatment, particularly when swelling is new, unexplained, or associated with an underlying medical condition
